Mike Dalton was born in 1968 just north of Boston, Massachusetts. At the age of 5, he moved to southern New Hampshire, where he was expelled from kindergarten. He attended various schools in New Hampshire, and nearly graduated from high school in 1987. In 1988, Mike attended Berklee College of Music in Boston for one semester, where he was terrorized by giant bugs and slow teaching.
After leaving Berklee with mediocre grades, Mike offered private music instruction at a local music store for six years. During that time, he experimented with electronic components for fun, attempting to design guitar amplifiers and effects. This led to more general experimentation involving lasers, robotics, and other cool things. After a few years of hobbying, Mike found a job repairing electronic power supplies.
In1993, Mike enrolled in a two-year Electronics Technology program at the New Hampshire Community Technical College. Graduating with highest honors and an Associate's degree in Applied Science, Mike moved on to a Bachelor's of Electrical Engineering Degree at the University of New Hampshire. During that time, Mike had numerous jobs soldering and repairing electronic circuit boards.
Four years later, he graduated with highest honors and began his Master's work. The Master's in Electrical Engineering program only took one year. Mike taught courses for the university, and assisted in various research projects.
The following year, Mike began work on his doctorate. After completing his Ph.D. coursework, Mike applied for a full-time faculty position at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where he taught while completing his dissertation.
Mike currently has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, and teaches at MCLA in the Computer Science department. He lives happily in the Berkshires, where he boasts to be “one of the loudest guitar players in the area”.

I started teaching at MCLA in the fall of 2005. Prior to that, I worked in the private sector for 15 years building out the technological infrastructure (hardware and software) of various non-profit organizations.
In addition to teaching in both the computer science department and business departments, I enjoy working with non-profits in the continued development of their IT infrastructure. At this point, Ive been doing this for 20 years.
I like the outdoors: backpacking, cycling, and kayaking. I am the faculty advisor for both the Ski Club and the Outdoors Club. MCLAs location in the Berkshires makes it a great place to work and play!

Frances Duncan
- Email: F.Duncan@mcla.edu
Frances joined MCLA part-time in the fall of 2009 to teach Web Development & Design. She continues to work in the field, designing and developing websites for small businesses, nonprofits, and educational organizations. A veteran of the dot-com boom (and bust) of the early-2000s, Frances is concerned with the organization of information, and building flexible, scalable, and highly usable websites that last for a long time.
When she’s not daydreaming about web standards, Frances thinks to think about (and cook) local food and drink really good coffee. She lives in North Adams with her husband and their rambunctious Labrador retriever.
